Technical Solutions
Introduction

Technology is fundamental to the paper, packaging, print and publishing supply chains. For example, paper making has developed from a cottage industry in China 3000 B.C. into a major modern manufacturing industry which relies heavily on technology for large-scale production of a product used widely in our everyday lives. New technologies are used to improve the inherent properties of paper and make it lighter and stronger and therefore more cost efficient to use. Likewise, print has undergone similar recent changes such as the revolution in ink-jet technology which is now being applied to printed electronics. Documents such as passports and banknotes make use of these technologies and others to provide security and protection against counterfeiting. Colour management is a key factor in the display aspects of ink on paper and likewise pixels on CRT and LCD screens where the physical world meets the digital one. As the various technologies have developed over the last 75 years, so has Pira's knowledge in these areas. The Consulting Group contains a number of specialists who are recognised experts in their fields who can advise on the application of technology to find new solutions and solve problems as well as making the business case for use of these for individual organisations. This applies across the paper, packaging and print supply chains, from the development of new types of paper, application of new technologies to the paper-making and printing processes, through to distribution and end-markets. Information on our specialist areas is given in the sub-menu pages.
