Supply Chain and Logistics

Packaging Supply Chain and Logistics

Introduction

To achieve business growth in today's climate and to meet the demands of the ever-changing supply landscape requires clarity and sophistication in packaging and supply chain strategy and operation.  Success will depend on development of strategy and implementation of operations that embrace the drivers and challenges of the global market place, and which facilitate:

  • identification and implementation of lowest 'total' cost solutions
  • reduced lead time and improved availability
  • growth in customer loyalty and in market share
  • rapid new product development and implementation
  • ability to innovate, be flexible and responsive.

A supply chain can be defined as 'a network of retailers, distributors, transporters, storage facilities, manufacturers, suppliers and materials providers that participate in the sale, delivery and production of a particular product'.

Logistics, as the most basic definition, is the efficient flow and storage of goods from their point of origin to the point of consumption.  It is part of the supply chain process that plans, implements and controls the flow of goods.  It can also be seen as the management of inventory, in rest or in motion.  Logistics has increasingly become a dominant activity in the development of the modern world and in our twenty-first century way of life.
